Inspired by Luke 24:29, where the disciples ask Jesus to \u201cstay with us, for it is nearly evening,\u201d Lyte penned this heartfelt plea for God\u2019s presence through life\u2019s darkest moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hymn was later set to music by William H. Monk in 1861, using the tune &#8220;Eventide.&#8221; Over the years, it has been embraced by churches, royalty, and even sporting events like the FA Cup Final.
